Her last words to her precious Ella were to have courage and be kind; Ella took these words to heart and embraced them fully, living out her mother's memory while taking care of her merchant father and their stately country home. After many years, her father chose to remarry and his new wife brought along with her two very spoiled, very self-centered stepsisters. While Ella was nervous about these new changes in her life she wanted, so very much, to believe that everything would turn out all right just so long as she lived out her mother's words in every act and deed. Not everyone had an appreciation for such kindness and such a gentle heart, though, and after the tragic death of her father, Ella's stepmother and stepsisters used and abused her. She became the maid of the house she was once the lady of and worked all day from sunup to sundown trying to fulfill every whim of her cruel stepmother. Banished to the attic from her own bedroom, Ella took to sleeping by the fire at night to keep warm and earned a new, cruel nickname: Cinderella. The only thing that made it bearable was the company of her animal friends whom she could hear and understand because she, unlike her stepmother and stepsisters, believed in the magic of the world around her and was not caught up in material things. One day, even Cinderella's noble spirit had been tested and pushed beyond her breaking point and she fled into the forest only to find the prince of the land stag hunting with his men. Appalled by such cruelty, she told the stag to flee and came across the prince himself who, predictably enough, introduced himself as Kit the Apprentice. Cinderella, for her part, gave no name at all. So when it was announced that the prince desired every single maiden in the land to come to the ball where he would pick his bride, Cinderella knew she must attend - not to see the prince, but to see her friend Kit once more. Industrious and clever with a needle, Cinderella made up her own dress from one of her mother's and presented herself downstairs to go to the ball, only to have it ripped from her by her stepmother and told she couldn't go. No matter what she did, no matter how brave and kind she was, it seemed that nothing had worked out for her since the death of her father. Her faith was wavering. Still, she had a little faith left and it was just enough to summon her fairy godmother who spun magic out of thin air - a coach, footmen, four white chargers and a beautiful gown with glass slippers to match. There was a catch, of course, and Cinderella had to be home before the last stroke of midnight. Once she arrived at the ball, she realized that Kit wasn't really just an apprentice at all but, instead, the prince himself. He led her in the first dance and several after that before they stole away to a secret garden and Cinderella nearly lost track of time; the evening was magical and she wished to stay forever but the magic, of course, was quick to fade. Cinderella enters the game as she's fleeing from the palace, one glass slipper left behind. |
